From Home to Home: Northwest Folklife Festival
Dear Northwest Folkife community,
We believe that uplifting our arts, culture, and heritage is paramount in nourishing our livelihood. Amidst these times of uncertainty, we have listened and heard the need for a space to connect during these digitally-driven circumstances. As such, in line with our mission to continue to serve our community, we have created a virtual platform where we can collectively showcase our folklife, right from our homes.
Northwest Folklife and Seattle Center are proud to announce
From Home to Home: Northwest Folklife Festival
taking place May 23-25, 2020 online at nwfolklifestreaming.org.
Presented by Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, From Home to Home: Northwest Folklife Festival will feature multiple program channels and a virtual marketplace that will bring together local culture bearers, artists, creatives, sponsors, and merchants all on one platform.
The full program includes:
- Livestream Channels of music, participatory dance, and workshops
- On-Demand Streaming Channel featuring an exploration of music, dance, storytelling, and more
- Family Fun Channel featuring pre-recorded performance videos and engaging hands-on activities
- Living Legacies Channel featuring storytelling and panel discussions that pass on tradition and culture
- Festival Artist Directory highlighting the 600+ artists initially slated to perform at the Northwest Folklife Festival
- Virtual Marketplace highlighting local merchants with online purchasing options

The Hoolyeh International Folk Dancers meet once a month on the 2nd Monday at the UU Fellowship Social Hall, 2945 NW Circle Blvd, Corvallis, OR 97330. We will meet from 6:30 to 9:30 with beginning teaching from 6:30 to 7:15, program dancing from 7:15 to 8:00, intermediate teaching from 8:00 to 8:15 or 8:30, and request dancing from 8:30 to 9:30.
We will mix Balkan, Israeli and other folk dances each week, with occasional live music from Balkan, Israeli and other traditions. Watch the calendar for announcements about special dances, but just come to each dance and learn all sorts of dances.
This annual folk festival will be conducted online over 2 consecutive Sundays, Sept. 13 and Sept 20. Portland FolkMusic Society is delighted to announce this new event – not because of the pandemic, but because we want to create a space where old and new friends from across the US and around the world enjoy music together. No cars, no hotels, just music!
PFS is planning a full slate of events, starting with a wonderful group of guest artists: Cindy Kallet & Grey Larsen, Rita Gallagher, William Seiji Marsh, Michelle Alany, LaRhonda Steele, and Arietta Ward, who will do concerts over the three days. We’ll have workshops, song circles and panels led by participants, and there will be big events every evening where participants who want to can sing for the whole group, and those who don’t can soak up the good vibes and good singing. In March this year, we held our first big on-line event, Singtime 2021, and the participants – from 26 states and nine countries – created a magical space, filled with warmth, music and community. San Miguel Fraser
Celtic + Castilian fiddle duo, María San Miguel and Galen Fraser, are multi-instrumentalists and educators who celebrate the values of community and traditional music in their unique chamber music style.
San Miguel Fraser is a project that will always stand for connection, celebrating the joy of music and shared inspiration. The dynamic duo was born as a result of the 2020 quarantine with the “Stay At Home Festival”. Thanks to the beautiful and universal folk community, they raised over $60,000 with the aim of bringing light to the world, maintaining morale and financially helping musicians around the globe. The “Stay At Home Festival” family lives on today with San Miguel Fraser.
As a lifelong fiddler and the son of Alasdair Fraser (Scottish fiddle champion), Galen Fraser continues the tradition of bringing us the traditional music of Scotland while adding contemporary tunes, some of which he has written himself. Maria San Miguel adds the voice of traditional Spanish music to the mix.
The Fall Song Festival is Portland FolkMusic Society’s annual on-line worldwide event. It takes place this year from 1 PM, Friday October 25, through 5 PM Sunday October 27, 2024 (all times Pacific). FallSong is a place to enjoy music from many different traditions, including lots of traditional folk genres, as well as rock, jazz, showtunes – whatever people like to sing. Along with song circles there are workshops and concerts. There is also lots of tech support for people who are uncomfortable with Zoom or want to learn more advanced Zoom use.

John Doyle and Mick McAuley
Irish musicians extraordinaire,
John Doyle (guitar) and
Mick McAuley (accordion, melodeon, concertina, whistles, guitar),
both previous members of the Irish-American supergroup Solas, and now soloists on the international stage, will perform a concert of instrumental music and songs in Corvallis before heading to the Yachats Celtic Festival. John Doyle is considered one of the best guitar players of traditional music in the world and is well-known for his guitar accompaniment of Liz Carroll, Karan Casey, and many others.
John Doyle & Mick McAuley have been playing music together on the international stage for over twenty years. As multi-instrumentalist members of Irish-American supergroup Solas, they combined to create part of the group’s unmistakable early sound which garnered critical worldwide acclaim with the Boston Herald heralding Solas as “The Best Traditional Band in the World”.
John Doyle is the most influential Irish American guitarist of his generation. Born in Dublin, John came up in a family where “everybody played something,” and his father, singer and song collector Sean Doyle, nurtured his interest in the deep wellspring of Irish song.
Kevin Burke
is an Irish master fiddler considered one of the finest living Irish fiddlers. For nearly five decades he has been at the forefront of Irish traditional music and Celtic music, performing and recording with the groups The Bothy Band, Patrick Street, and the Celtic Fiddle Festival. He is a 2002 recipient of a National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. He has been living in Portland for decades but this is his first concert in Corvallis in many years.
GALLOWGLASS
Gallowglass, a Contemporary Celtic Folk Band from Bellingham, WA will present a fundraiser concert for The Corvallis Celtic Festival and the South Benton County Food Bank. Presented by the Corvallis Folklore Society, the show is at Heritage Hall in Monroe (the old Methodist Church, 648 Orchard Street, Monroe) on Saturday May 24.
With a combination of emotional vocal delivery, fresh melodic arrangements, and airtight accompaniment, Gallowglass has developed a style of contemporary Celtic folk that Irish Music Magazine calls “an inspired approach to the tradition.” The group, featuring Jan Peters (vocals, harmonica), Mishon Kirkland (vocals, Irish flute), Zach Bauman (Irish Bouzouki) and David Pender Lofgren (Bodhrán), has become one of the Pacific Northwest’s most celebrated Celtic music
They will be joined by Corvallis fiddler Erika Nagamoto.

- 7-9pm- concert
There will be an open Celtic session with the band after the show. All instruments and abilities welcome!

with The Nettles playing
and Noah Grunzweig calling.
The Nettles have been a premiere Corvallis contra dance band for years, having played here most recently at the March 1 dance.
Noah Grunzweig will have called here most recently at the June 21 dance.
