Local Folk! is back
Local Folk! is a free, monthly, open mic (without the mic!) program of
local artists offering a wide variety of music, including original creations. There is no requirement to play and anyone is invited to just come and enjoy the music.
We have a new location at TROUBADOR MUSIC CENTER, 521 SW 2nd St, Corvallis.
Shari Ame is the new manager of the event. She can be contacted at shariame@gmail.com. Ryan Buys is the operator of the shop who is allowing
the use of his place for this CFS offering. This is a monthly event, every first Thursday of the month.
Doors open at 6:45pm and folks can sign up to perform at that time.
Performances are from 7pm-9pm. We conduct shared performances for
approximately two hours without a break, though people are free to move around.
This is an entirely acoustic event, without amplification. Each performer or performance group will have a maximum time allotment of 15 minutes to perform up to three songs, as in the past. There is a piano available. Contact Shari for more information or if you would like to help.
This is a free event, open to the public.
We do ask for a $5 donation to help defray the costs of the facility.

David Jacobs-Strain
and Bob Beach
David Jacobs-Strain and Bob Beach are a multigenerational, bicoastal duo who have been performing together since 2010. They currently perform between 70 and 100 shows a year on both east and west coasts, delighting and bewildering roots music lovers. “Have you ever seen anything like this before?” Wait. Just wait until you see them live.
Hailing from Eugene, OR, Jacobs-Strain is a
striking guitar player with a deep love of blues and roots music. His voice is an unexpected delight of silky pure intonation. Bob Beach has been a professional musician for over 50 years. He adds the harmonica and
flute to his vocals. Together the two reveal their broad scope of musical genres.
David Jacobs-Strain writes songs and performs them and covers. He’s also an accomplished guitarist, playing a Pogreba resonator guitar. His skill is as distinctive as the guitar. As Art Podell in Art Folkworks said, “Boy oh boy, can he play! Taj Mahal meets Mark Knopfler? A good comparison.”
With comparable skills on the harmonica and flute, Bob Beach, from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, has more than 50 years as a working musician. Bob has performed as a sideman for the Avett Brothers, Sean Mullins, Spinning Leaves, the Youngers, Ollabelle, and many more. He’s performed regionally with several groups and musicians including the Bob Beach Trio, Mason Porter, Hezekiah Jones, the Cat’s Pajamas, and the Philadelphia Jug Band.
The two, David from Oregon and Bob from Pennsylvania, have formed an unusual duo, of two generations, of two coasts, and with a new take on blues and roots music. On stage, the two sit next to each other. Bob often uses his 1940s microphone; David sings the lead most of the time; and both take turns wowing the audience with solos on their respective instruments. In 2023 they released their only duo album thus far, The Belfry Session, recorded at The Belfry in Sisters, Oregon.

A voluntary donation of $25-30 per person is suggested, 100% of which goes to the artist. Donations will be collected at the door.
Note:
- You are welcome and encouraged to bring your own food and/or drinks (we’ll supply bottled water and sodas).
- Bring a camp chair and/or blanket to sit on while on the lawn.
- While summertime temperatures should be warm during the day and cooler as the sun goes down, check the weather report and bring clothes that are appropriate for the day and evening. Although the concert area will be in the shade by showtime, if you want, you are welcome to bring an umbrella to set up in the perimeter of the seating area.
- If you find that you have to cancel your reservation, please contact Pete Angwin ASAP (see contact information). Non-cancelled no-shows make it difficult to host concerts in the future!
Directions: Turn onto Greenberry Road from Hwy 99W or Bellfountain Road, then turn north onto the gravel road where the mailbox says 26809, then follow the road approx. ½-mile to the white farmhouse.

Kalos
Kalos is made up of three innovative interpreters and composers of Celtic roots music: Eric McDonald, Ryan McKasson and Jeremiah McLane. They are masters of tradition who purposefully explore the dark corners floating on its edges, delivering an alluring musical complexity full of spontaneity and joyful exuberance. They set the standard for traditional repertoire with an underlying drive and pulse charged with rhythmic electricity and integrity, forging a new musical path that draws on Celtic, Breton, American and other musical traditions on accordion, guitar, fiddle, and vocals. The title of their new album, Headland, which refers to a point where land meets sea, is a fitting analogy for the exploratory space Kalos inhabits — one that calls forth driving, heartfelt music journeying through unknown territory to seek and find its essence – the enduring, resilient experience of the human heart.

The Fall Song Festival is Portland FolkMusic Society’s annual on-line worldwide event. It takes place this year from 1 PM, Friday October 24, through 5 PM Sunday October 26, 2025 (all times Pacific). FallSong is a place to enjoy music from many different traditions, including lots of traditional folk genres, as well as rock, jazz, showtunes – whatever people like to sing. Along with song circles there are workshops and concerts. There is also lots of tech support for people who are uncomfortable with Zoom or want to learn more advanced Zoom use.
The workshop and song circle program is close to full (although we can add more spaces, so it’s never really full). You can see a preliminary list of the participants leading events and the titles of their events on the website. No times yet, just a list – we’re working on the schedule.
We have about a half-dozen spaces left for 20-minute mini-concerts. You don’t need to be a superstar to give your own concert; if you think you MIGHT like to give a mini-concert, and if that means that you really DO want to give one, don’t be shy. You will never have a friendlier audience.
We still could use a few more session assistants, so if you are very comfortable with Zoom and would be willing to help out at a session – especially one you are going to attend anyway – let us know.

Breabach
Twenty years on from winning the Danny Kyle Open Stage Award at Celtic Connections, Breabach remain securely ranked amongst Scotland’s most skilled & imaginative contemporary-folk acts and at the forefront of the burgeoning traditional music scene. The band unite deep roots in Highland and Island Gaelic tradition alongside progressive musical influences and have cultivated a unique sound, anchoring double bagpipes, fiddle, whistle, step-dance and song with energetic double bass and guitar accompaniment.
Versatility, love of experimentation and a willingness to push the boundaries of Scottish roots music have endured as the core values of the band over the past two decades. They have embraced and pioneered many cross-genre collaborations, linking up with artists including Quebec’s Le Vent du Nord, BAFTA award-winning animator Cat Bruce, indigenous Australasian artist Moana & the Tribe, video game composer Big Giant Circles, Cape Breton powerhouse Beòlach and most recently the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra.
With 8 critically acclaimed studio releases to date, an extensive global touring schedule and having received recognition with 6 BBC ALBA Traditional Music Awards, a 2023 German Record Critic’s Award and as European Folk Group of the year finalists in the prestigious Songlines Awards, Breabach’s journey shows no sign of slowing. They continue their adventures throughout this special anniversary year with performances and festivals across the UK, USA and Europe.

Kate and Brendan
Kate Gregory and Brendan Hearn form an innovative duo that brings together American Old Time, Irish and other folk music traditions on fiddle and cello. They combine their backgrounds from multiple musical styles with their shared appreciation for melody and groove to create rhythmic arrangements of traditional and original tunes and songs. The tunes they play and write live both in the rich and multi-continental history and in the imaginative future of traditional music.
This is a rare west coast appearance that will benefit both the South Benton County Food Pantry and the Corvallis Celtic Festival. Heritage Hall is a warm and cosy venue located at the old Methodist Church in Monroe.
