The Wallop Sisters may look like ordinary cake-bakin’, Betty Crocker kind of gals, but the Wallop Sisters (Jeanne Holmes, Mary Strickroth and Suzannah Doyle) pack a surprising musical punch with their luscious three-part harmonies, unique arrangements and eclectic selection of tunes (who knew James Brown could sound so good on the humble uke? Whoa! I feel GOOD!)

8:30 Cooper HollowWith members Jim Hockenhull (Fiddle, guitar, accordion, vocals), Sally Clark (Mandolin, guitar, harmony vocals), and Paul Scheerer (Guitar, mandolin, tenor banjo, harmonica, lead vocals), Cooper Hollow is a high energy string band. This year the dance and party will be April 26, 2014 at the Mary’s River Grange Hall. In the afternoon from 1 – 4 pm, that Saturday, we will offer a dance workshop to tackle some hard dances many of you have always wanted to learn. The Quarks with Sue Baker
The Quarks are an exciting new Northwest band with Betsy Branch on fiddle and guitar, Bill Tomczak on clarinet, saxophone and percussion, and Terry Wergeland on piano and accordion. Betsy and Terry have played together for dances since 1994, and when Bill moved to Portland in 2012, he was thrilled to join forces with them. With their mix of instruments and improvisatory natures, you never know what to expect from this trio. Their delight in playing together translates to the dance floor, and you are likely to hear plenty of laughter from the stage. When not playing, the three of them love to pontificate about the mysteries of the universe (like how 3 quarks form a particle), thus inspiring the band name.
Sue has been calling dances all over the Pacific Northwest since 2001. Sue says “Dancing is a joy and I try to make every one a wonderful experience for everyone in the hall.” From her store of “dorky” wedding dances to complex technical dances, she’s danced most of them and draws on the ones she thinks each crowd will like and be successful at. And as she likes to add, “It’s just a dance.”

Alex Hargreaves and Nathaniel Smith join with Sarah Jarosz to form the Sarah Jarosz Trio.
SARAH JAROSZ is a 22- year-old, Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who hails from just outside Austin, TX. A recent graduate from the prestigious New England Conservatory, she released her third album, Build Me Up From Bones, for Sugar Hill Records on September 24th. Over the past four years, Jarosz, who musically fits comfortably where contemporary folk, Americana and roots music intersect, has covered a remarkable amount of ground thus far. She has toured the United States extensively, as well as Canada and the UK, taped Austin City Limits and the BBC Series The Transatlantic Sessions and appeared on A Prairie Home Companion. Her two previous records (Song Up In Her Head andFollow Me Down) received high praise from outlets including Rolling Stone, New York Times, USA Today, Paste, Mojo, Acoustic Guitar and American Songwriter, and she has received multiple Grammy and Americana Music Association nominations.
Sarah is supported on the road by stellar musicians Alex Hargreaves (fiddle) and Nathaniel Smith (cello). Hargreaves recently completed the prestigious Berklee Global Jazz Institute at the Berklee College of Music in Boston and has been tapped to perform and record with such musicians as Jerry Douglas and jazz master Danilo Perez. Smith has toured for years with renown Cape Breton fiddler Natalie MacMaster and, more recently, in various configurations with Jeremy Kittel. Jarosz, Hargreaves and Smith, who met at various music camps when they were much younger, have been performing together since 2010; the sheer joy they express on stage during performances is contagious. Hargreaves and Smith are both featured on Jarosz’s upcoming release Build Me Up From Bones.
The Barnstormers with Tarka Ayres
Based in Eugene, the Eugene City Barnstormers is a string band dedicated to fun times. The band prefers two lane roads. For over 10 years the Barnstormers’ boys have traveled rural Oregon together, playing country dances, community events and gatherings of all sorts, all in search of sparkling moments when dancers, musicians, friends and family join together in motion, music and on occasion, mayhem. Shawn Lockery plays fiddle, Wes Messinger plays guitar, Paul Clements plays fiddle, Ambo Daugherty plays the banjo, and Cliff Kentros plays the bass. The Eugene Barnstormers enjoy long sets of traditional dance tunes played in their own storming sort of way, beckoning folks from all walks of life to lay aside their concerns, stretch out, loosen up and move, move, move. Beyond the dance halls, the band plays on, visiting tunes and songs familiar, and not, till deep sleep comes to all. Come on out and have some fun with the Eugene Barnstormers.
Portland resident Tarka Ayres called her first contra dance in October, 2011. She’s since called regularly at the Portland open mike dances, and has honed her skills by calling full evenings in Coos Bay and Astoria.
