Tom Paxton

An integral part of the songwriting and folk music community since the early 60’s Greenwich Village scene, Tom Paxton has become a celebrated voice of his generation — addressing the issues of injustice and inhumanity, laying bare the absurdities of modern culture and celebrating the tender bonds of family, friends, and community.

Paxton is a GRAMMY® Lifetime Achievement Award Winner and an ASCAP Lifetime Achievement Award Winner. Regarded as one of the great songwriters of our time, he is the man who wrote and lives by those words, “Sweet peace, peace will come, and let it begin with me.”

The American Strings series brings renowned artists from around the U.S. to Corvallis and Oregon State University for an in-depth look at how and why stringed instruments play such a profound role in American music.
Hosted by the GRAMMY Museum’s Bob Santelli, the OSU College of Liberal Arts and the Majestic Theatre, the conversation and performance that comprises each segment of American Strings makes for a one of a kind opportunity to appreciate and know better the great American music tradition.

7:30 Blues and Sunshine

Blues & Sunshine features two of LB’s own, Ron Sharman & retired English prof Tom Chase, joined by Steve Sever, the inspirational mentor & father of nationally known singer/songwriter Matt The Electrician. These local guys are a garage band in the truest sense of the words. Come join the fun.

8:30 Rita Brown and Bill Smyth

Rita and Bill have been performing, together and separately, for over ten years as a duet, soloists, and as members of such groups as Where To, Crooked Kate and The Flow, after meeting as part of a Joe Cocker cover band.  They are not to be missed.

The best Cellar is a once-a-month evening of acoustic music. Admission is “pay what you will,” and kids are free. Cookies and coffee are available. Woody Lane has been calling contra dances throughout the Pacific Northwest for more than 25 years, and when he’s not calling you can find him dancing.

Each dance is taught.  No partner necessary (it’s traditional to dance each dance with a different partner)

Corvallis Guitar Society

The goal of the Corvallis Guitar Society is to act as a catalyst to bring local guitarists out of the woodwork and provide an opportunity to perform and enjoy guitar music in a friendly and supportive atmosphere. The accent here is on participation and we hope people will want to participate in the open stage section also – no piece of music is too short or simple (though there is a five minute limit if we have a full sign-up sheet) and you are guaranteed a warm round of applause for showing us what you can do! We do have a limited number of open stage slots so be sure to sign up early at the front desk on the way in.

To promote classical and related guitar styles by providing a supportive performance environment for people of all ages and ability.

We seek to achieve this through a monthly meeting that provides an opportunity to discuss, listen to, and play solo guitar music including classical, flamenco, finger-style, jazz, as well as classical guitar ensemble styles.

The musical partnership between consummate performer Alasdair Fraser, “the Michael Jordan of Scottish fiddling”, and brilliant Californian cellist Natalie Haas spans the full spectrum between intimate chamber music and ecstatic dance energy. Over the last 18 years of creating a buzz at festivals and concert halls across the world, they have truly set the standard for fiddle and cello in traditional music. They continue to thrill audiences internationally with their virtuosic playing, their near-telepathic understanding and the joyful spontaneity and sheer physical presence of their music.

Fraser has a concert and recording career spanning over 30 years, with a long list of awards, accolades, radio and television credits, and feature performances on top movie soundtracks (Last of the Mohicans, Titanic, etc.). In 2011, he was inducted into the Scottish Traditional Music Hall of Fame. Haas, a graduate of the Juilliard School of Music, is one of the most sought after cellists in traditional music today. She has performed and recorded with a who’s who of the fiddle world including Mark O’Connor, Natalie MacMaster, Irish supergroups Solas and Altan, Liz Carroll, Dirk Powell, Brittany Haas, Darol Anger, Jeremy Kittel, Hanneke Cassel, Laura Cortese, and many more.

This seemingly unlikely pairing of fiddle and cello is the fulfillment of a long-standing musical dream for Fraser. His search eventually led him to find a cellist who could help return the cello to its historical role at the rhythmic heart of Scottish dance music, where it stood for hundreds of years before being relegated to the orchestra. The duo’s debut recording, Fire & Grace, won the coveted the Scots Trad Music “Album of the Year” award, the Scottish equivalent of a Grammy. Since its release, the two have gone on to record four more critically acclaimed albums that blend a profound understanding of the Scottish tradition with cutting-edge string explorations. In additional to performing, they both have motivated generations of string players through their teaching at fiddle camps across the globe.

SAC Presents welcomes fiddling supergroup Childsplay with Irish singer Karan Casey in their first-ever appearance in Oregon. This special evening will feature the beautiful singing of Casey, a native of Ireland, with the voices of violins all made by the renowned Massachusetts violin maker, Robert M. Childs. Childsplay brings virtuosic fiddling and features a wide range of outstanding all-star instrumentalists, ranging from all-Ireland and Scottish fiddle champions to members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and includes National Heritage award winning Irish step-dancer Kevin Doyle and Pilobolus dance theater member Molly Gawler. This is a multi-faceted evening of live performance you won’t want to miss

This dance is hosted by the new Contra Dance Club at Oregon State University and in partnership with CFS. The location is at the OSU Women’s Building, located on the West side of the Memorial Union Quad in central OSU campus. Many parking areas are available around campus and ideal spots are highlighted below.

The Band: Joyride

Joyride is a Portland Oregon contra dance band known for fun, skilled play, tune sets carefully tailored to dances, and well-phrased melodies and harmonies set in a danceable groove. George Penk’s rich, compelling fiddle, Erik Weberg’s deft flute, harmonica and bombarde, Sue Songer’s heartbeat piano and Jeff Kerssen-Griep’s vital guitar and percussion provide modern and traditional tunes for dances, weekends and festivals throughout the year. This band loves creating a great experience for everyone, every time.  Come catch a lift with Joyride at home or on the road!

The Caller: William Watson

William Watson, a resident of Eugene, OR, danced his first contra in 1989 and began calling in Texas in 1992. Having called numerous contra events in cities coast-to-coast, William’s extensive experience and soothing voice project a calm confidence. His vigilant and thoughtful dance programming ensures a variety of figures, transitions, and sequences to entertain and support new dancers while offering the occasional challenge for the more advanced. His calling proficiency and sensitivities ensure everyone has a good time.

Cliff and Chere Periera and Mark Weiss have been  playing and singing together for more than three decades, and they’re still going strong.

8:30 Star McMullen

While I used to say I played oldtime fiddle, the term “oldtime” has come to be used in many other ways since I started playing with the Oregon Oldtime fiddlers in 1987. What I play is Texas style oldtime fiddle which includes many tunes that originated in the U.S., sometimes as progressive development of old tunes from the British Isles. Add to that the influence of swing and ragtime, and you get what I do!
Star McMullen won the seniors division of the national fiddling championship, at Wiezer, Idaho. AND, she was Alex Hargreaves fiddle teacher.
